greetings!

Enrique Lugo, aka chikle and proud son of Mexican Immigrants, is a San Diego native dedicated to progressive education and community activism. Enrique served as an Art teacher at High Tech High Chula Vista from 2012 to 2019 where his work centered around identity, cultivating safe spaces & a sense of belonging for all. His school projects ranged from small personal paintings/drawings, functional art, cardboard identity masks, personal Matryoshka dolls, to projects as big as community murals! As a visual artist, chikle has been showing his work since 2004 in galleries throughout California, New Mexico, Texas, Italy, and Mexico. Passionate about commUNITY, Enrique has been involved in activism, promoting entrepreneurship, producing family friendly events, and curating art shows since 2005. Most notably, in 2011 Enrique and his wife Selina co-founded a traveling urban arts market called Mercado Golondrina in collaboration with other local artists. The mission of the group was to promote entrepreneurship and create accessible opportunities for artists to create and sell their work. In 2016 they opened a brick and mortar shop in Barrio Logan with 4 other artists creating a permanent home for Golondrina where they continue to promote and support local artists. In the spring of 2016 Enrique and Selina, along with 3 other families, started a group called ProjectREO which set out to revitalize Reo Drive and Paradise Hills. In the summer of 2017 they joined forces with 4 local families to open Paradise Hills’ first coffee shop, PRC!

Enrique continues to produce art, participate in his community, and currently serves as Dean of Culture (Students) at High Tech High International in San Diego, California.
